The American Bulldog is the closest surviving relative of the famous Old English Bulldog, which was once used as a fighting dog in Britain. Today, the American Bulldog is used in tracking, and guard work. They make for a wonderful family pet. Their temperament is typically friendly, with close bond to its family. Even though, they can become aggressive toward strangers and other dogs if not properly socialized. Average weight is 70-120 pounds; coat color can be a number of colors ranging in solids of brindle, brown, red and tan with and without traces of white. Due to genetics American Bulldogs often live to be only 10-12 years old. Most common health issues are thyroids, skin disorders, hip or elbow dysplasia, entropion, kidney disorder, bone cancer, ectropion, NCL, and issues relating to enlarged hearts.
