Previously the Australian Cattle Dog has been known as the Blue Heeler or Australian Heeler. These dogs were bred to handle working all day as cattle herders in the hot, rough terrain of the Australian outback. Due to their agility, determination, and strength they can handle the most stubborn cattle in the most confined, hard terrain. The Australian Cattle Dog has either one of two short, smooth coat colors: speckled blue or speckled red. Due to their high energy and intelligence they need to stay active to be happy. Temperament in the breed is low; they are known to be protective of owner and property, and wary of strangers.
