Basenji dog pictures

The Basenji breed goes by many names; a few are Congo Dog, African Bush Dog and African Barkless Dog. It is referred to as a barkless dog because of its unusual yodel and howl type voice it uses in short burst. It is also a unique dog breed due to the Basenji breeding cycle, only in heat once a year. Basenjis were originally bred to be hunting dogs in Africa. Size of the breed is typically 24 pounds, height averages 16 inches. Tails are curled over. Coats standard colors are red, tricolor, white, and brindle. They run with a graceful, horse like gait. They are said to be able to climb a chain link fence, clean themselves like a cat, favor standing, and to be able to jump 6 feet in the air. Life span of the breed averages 13 years.
