Just like the name implies the Basset Hound is a type of hound dog, and like all hound dogs were bred to hunt prey. Basset Hounds particularly were bred to hunt rabbits in France. The breed comes in various different colors the most common is brown with white. These dogs are short, only up to 15 inches tall, and big boned, weighing between 35 and 70 pounds. Their costs are made up of hard, shiny short hairs. They are often easy to recognize due to their very log ears, sagging skin and heavily padded paws. Be aware they are very vocal and hard to train, but make for a loveable family dog. Health issues in Basset Hounds often involve issues with their eyes or ears. Average life span is 11 years.
