YESTERDAY'S QUESTION:
" Gastric Dilatation" is the technical name for an abnormal accumulation of air, fluid, and/or foam in the stomach.  "Volvulus" refers to a dangerous twisting of the stomach. As the stomach swells with fluid and/or air, it can twist between its two fixed anchor points, the esophagus and the duodenum. When this happens, the esophagus becomes clamped off and everything is trapped inside the stomach. An afflicted dog cannot vomit or belch to relieve the internal pressure, so the stomach continues to enlarge and compresses the veins in the abdomen.  This restricts blood flow back to the heart and leads to low blood pressure, followed by dangerous cardiac problems and, often, shock. The stomach can rupture if medical attention is not sought.  According to a Purdue University study, nearly 25% of dogs can be expected to die during or shortly after an episode of this condition.  It is the leading cause of death in giant and large breed dogs. What is the common name for this condition?
ANSWER:
Bloat

This large breed is 40 times more likely to develop GDV (gastric dilation-volvulus aka bloat) than a mixed breed dog. They top the list of vulnerable breeds with the highest incidence of GDV – nearly double the risk compared to the second most vulnerable breed.  Our own DS friend,
Max is this breed of dog and Gracie, one of the founding dogs of Three Dog Bakery, is also a member of the breed.

Mom knows a woman that has a GD that she had the stomach stapled to the inside wall so this wouldn't happen. Large barrel chested dogs, Labs, Greyhounds, GDs, any dog with a large barrel chest is at risk, even Rudy, with his breed of Pit Bulls. The best thing to do is make sure the dogs don't woof down their food, don't drink too much at a time and don't eat and drink too much after exertion.
