Tough and Rough Times for All Rescue Groups (Please Read)

The tough economic times have hit all of us, but animal shelters and rescue organizations are feeling a particular crunch. When people loose their homes or are forced to cut back on expenses, their pets are sometimes the first to go. Dog food and vet bills can be expensive if you have a pet, you know.

The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals estimates that one to two million pets have been abandoned since the start of the recession in December 2007. The figures are based on real estate industry numbers and estimated pet ownership.

As it means donations are down 40 percent, and some volunteers have had to quit to take on second jobs. But the bills don't stop.  1000's of animals are in need.

Stephen Zawistowski, the ASPCA's executive vice president for national programs, told the AP, "At pet food banks, they are seeing people who used to be donors now showing up asking if they can get a bag of dog food."

The rescue organization are hanging on, not by a long shot. What can you do? If you can afford it, donate to your local rescue group. Better yet, if you're thinking of adopting a pet, now is the time.

So remember your rescues during the holiday season.  Remember you can always donate on someones behalf as a Christmas present.

Always keep these needy dogs and kitties in your thoughts and prayers.

That is wonderful that your mommy is doing this Atlas it really is. So many rescues and humane societies are hurting right now and we all have to think of ways to help them out and your mommy came up with a very good idea. Bailey is right anything will help them right now, donations and kind gifts. Without our rescues and local shelters where we they all be today. We put our paws together and pray they will all make it through the rough and tough times with all the good peeps out in the world to help.

Every year the Nashville Humane Association does their Santa photos as a way to raise money, so we are going to see Santa on Saturday morning. Also, Mommy is doing a promotion at her work (she runs a grooming salon)...every Pet Parent who brings in a bag of new/unopened food will get a free teeth brushing for their dog. All the food will be donated to the local shelter that she works with. Maybe other businesses can do similar collections.

Great idea Min Pins. we have seen many shelters close because of the hard times and just no donations. Some have been some wonderful shelters and others not so wonderful. We pray for all these people and the animals. The hardest thing to do has got to be to give up your life long friend. But people are giving up dogs for silly reasons too. Even a little bit helps. Think about a small donation. Some even need Dog food, old blankets, newspapers. Some shelters post a wish list. God Bless
