Not to boast, but I was one of the best stock dogs in the County. Case in point: My mom's horses got loose one day, crossing the busy state highway to the graveyard. My mom, panicked, screamed, "Mahler, go get the horses!" (Calm and assertive, not that day!)
As always, I obeyed the first time. I brought every horse safely home, watching carefully lest one of those eighteen-wheelers that sped around the curve surrounding our property run us down.
My life ended one December night. The evening before deer season, I was out checking the boundaries of our property (for that's what country dogs did back then). I strayed a bit off the path, and a too-eager deer hunter, who mistook my fawn color for a deer, shot me.
For several weeks, I, mortally wounded, heeded my ever-faithful mistress' calls as she gave the recall command. A few feet a day, I struggled home. Although she took me to the vet's as soon as I returned, it was too late.
To my surprise, I ended up in a place of green pastures and still waters, for I am, after all, a shepherd. Here I await my mistress' return . . . .
